Readers React as Hanover ‘Institution’ Everything But Anchovies Abruptly Closes Its Doors

Many readers were devastated in May 2017 to learn of the closing of Everything But Anchovies in Hanover after 38 years in business. Propelled by social shares from well-known Dartmouth College alumni who considered EBAs to be part of their college experience, the breaking-news scoop I discovered set a record for most hits on a single article.

I compiled a sampling of reactions on Storify (click here to view) to complement reporter Jordan Cuddemi’s story, and secured the restaurant’s well-known radio jingle to use in a video, shot by Jovelle Tamayo and edited by me.

First Baptist Church in Lebanon Consumed by Fire

I oversaw breaking-news coverage of the most significant fire in the Upper Valley in at least five years: a three-alarm fire that gutted the First Baptist Church in downtown Lebanon, which was toned out about 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2016, too late to get much more than a photo in the print edition. This included an overnight effort to coordinate with reporters and a photographer at the scene and editors working remotely; editing copy; launching breaking news posts on our website, social media and email newsletter for our readers; and editing and posting video that a reporter shot at the fire, among other tasks. In the final two days of calendar year 2016, it became our most-read story of the year.

We continued breaking-news coverage over the next days, weeks and months, including the arrest of an alleged arsonist, the dismantling of the church’s remains and the congregation’s ongoing efforts to rebuild.

Black Lives Matter Protest at Dartmouth College

Nearly 250 Dartmouth College students gathered in Baker-Berry Library on Nov. 12, 2015, to demonstrate in solidarity with students at the University of Missouri, where racially charged incidents and the school’s response recently led to the resignation of the university’s president. The protest continued with a march through downtown Hanover. I created a Storify (click here to view) to show (1) crowd-sourced images from the demonstration, (2) a video I recorded for the Valley News and (3) the varied public reaction.
